Zulfikar Hirji
I am Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at York University, Toronto (Canada). Trained as an anthropologist and social historian, I am interested in how human societies articulate, represent and perform understandings of self, community, and other, and on issues of knowledge production, visual, material, and sensory discourses and practices, and critical pedagogy. I have conducted independent, participatory, and collaborative historical research, and ethnographic fieldwork in East Africa, South Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, Europe, and North America. My publications include a range of books, articles, films, videos, exhibitions, podcasts, and zines. I teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses and supervise the research of BA, MA, and PhD students. I received my DPhil in Social Anthropology from the University of Oxford (2002), an MPhil in Islamic Studies from the University of Cambridge (1997), and a BA (Joint Honours) in Religious Studies & Anthropology from McGill University (1989). I have held fellowships at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, Institute of Ismaili Studies, Forrest Research Foundation, and Massey College.
